John Butler remembered in new Summer School Scholarship

College Players, Limerick, in association with the Drama League of Ireland, is proud to announce a new summer school scholarship in memory of one of the great exponents of amateur drama, the late John Butler.

John, who passed away in December 2008, was involved in the stage for over 40 years. Apart from being an active participant in school plays and pageants, John played various acting roles from Tops of the Town productions to Radio drama.

Involved with several acting groups in the Limerick/North Cork region, John played in theatres from Ireland to Japan being highly acclaimed in all corners of the world.

But his performances at the All Ireland Drama Festival in Athlone earned him the highest accolades. He won Best Supporting Actor in Torch Players production of “Arrah-na-Pogue” in 1989 and again in 2008 as S B O’Donnell in Shoestring’s production of Brian Friel’s “Philadelphia, Here I Come!”

He was a member of the cast of College Players production of “Metamorphosis” which won the All Ireland in 1995,.  But the crowning glory came with his award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Sylvie Tansey in Shoestring’s production of “The Salvage Shop” by Jim Nolan at the All Ireland finals in 2002.

The scholarship will be presented as an additional award at this year’s RTÉ All Ireland Drama Festival in Athlone
