NUI Certificate in Directing for Theatre 2010 - 2011
deadline: 5pm, 27 August 2010
NUI Maynooth launched the country's first undergraduate training programme in directing in September 2006. The NUI Cert in Directing is part-time, running for two Saturdays each month from September through to May each year.
It is run in The LAB Foley Street, Dublin, and is taught by professional directors. The course organiser and principal tutor is Peter Hussey (Crooked House), with key sessions taught by Annie Ryan (The Corn Exchange), John O Brien (Guna Nua), Jo Mangan (The Performance Corporation) and Annabelle Comyn (Hatch). It serves as an intensive and solid introduction to composition, actioning techniques, interpretation, directing theory, select acting methodologies, participatory theatre practices, working with theatre professionals, voice and movement for the director.
It is suitable for emerging directors, youth theatre directors, actors who would like to direct, or for anyone who wishes to learn about the practicalities of directing, and who would like the opportunity to gain an NUI Certificate in the process. The course is challenging, fun and very practical.
- Applicants must be working in the field - or at least have access to a company, youth theatre or amateur group with whom you can direct a play as part of the Certificate requirements.
- Applicants must be 23 or over (younger applicants contact NUI Maynooth directly (see below) for information about NUI age-limits)
- Directors of youth theatres who take part in the annual NT Connections Project (via National Theatre, London) may double up by using their Connections play as their Major Directing Project in the NUIM Certificate.
The course is run on Saturdays twice per month.
Fees for 2010-2011 are €950 for the year.
Fees can be paid in two installments. It is worthwhile applying to your local arts officer, and community development partnership organisation for financial assistance as this course is unique in Ireland.
Further information about the Certificate in Directing can be had from the Course Coordinator, Peter Hussey on 00 353 (0)45 – 446612 or 00 353 (0)87 2759420.

State of the Art Technical Facilities, Fly Tower, 5 floors, 5 bars.
Designed by Daniel Liebskind, The 2000 seater theatre is at the heart of the Grand Canal Dock Development. Capacity is that of both the Olympia Theatre and The Gaiety together.
SISK are main contractors on the project, and are working alongside structural engineers ARUP, architects Daniel Liebskind/McCauley Daye O'Connell/RHWL.
The theatre will front a 10,000 square foot public space at Grand Canal Square. With 2,200 seats, the theatre will be the focal point of the large square, an effect that will be heightened by red glazed paving that mimics a red carpet to its door.
The new venue will open on 18 March, 2010, with a performance of Swan Lake by Russian State Ballet. It will host large-scale visiting productions of music, theatre, opera, ballet and dance. Incoming shows include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Hairspray.
