Check the availability of the play for performance by amateur companies before commencing rehearsals. Payment for rights should reach the DLI office at least 14 days before the date of the first performance(s). Playwrights who have been deceased for over 70 years are not subject to copyright. HOWEVER translations or adaptations of their works may still be subject to copyright law. (e.g. The Seagull by Anton Chekov trans Tom Stoppard) Restrictions
apply to a number of playwrights work. (Samuel Beckett, Bertholt
Brecht, Dario Fo, Harold Pinter, Edward Albee to name a few) The
restrictions in place change from time to time so please consult
the DLI. Amateur groups in Ireland who consult the main agents
directly will be referred back to the Drama League of Ireland. As
always check before starting rehearsals of any play to make
sure that the rights are available.
